The BBGV would like to announce 13 BBGV Board members for 20119/20 as below. The BBGV Annual General Meeting AGM was held on Thursday 30th May with total 45 members attending at Sofitel Plaza Saigon in HCMC and Hilton Opera Hotel in Hanoi. A report of BBGV affairs and activities over the past year, including the Chamber, Business Centre and Charity was presented to members. A financial review of 2018/19 and budget of 2019/20 were given to members.

We would also like to announce the results of the election for the BBGV Board in FY19/20 as follows:

Chris has been Dean of British University Vietnam for 9 years and has been active within the Board of BBGV for 7 years. Based in Hanoi he is Vice Chair and Board Rep for VBF. His interest range from charity to advocacy.

Prior to this Chris worked at City University London for 15 years becoming a senior teaching fellow and Director of the Executive MBA programme.

Chris is also on the advisory board of United Nations International School and Operation Smile.

 2. MARK SAYER (MA Cantab) – Board Member

Mark is the Founding Principal of The British Vietnamese International School, Hanoi.  He arrived in Vietnam in April 2013 with the school opening in August of the same year.  He is widely experienced in education and educational management and leadership, having had a previous headship in the UK from 2008.  His experience ranges from Early Years to High School (students aged 2 to 18).

Prior to embarking on a career in education, Mark had careers in accountancy, marketing advertising, business development: skills which are of great value now in the delivery of outstanding education for students in Hanoi.

His current staff team is over 230 strong and he specializes in professional development, curriculum planning, finance, marketing and branding. 

 3. MATTHEW POWELL (BSc MRICS) –  Board Member

Matt is the head of the Hanoi and Danang offices at Savills Vietnam, covering the North and Central regions. He joined Savills in 2004 to head the Office Agency team in Hanoi. Matt became a Director of Savills Vietnam in 2009 after setting up the Residential Development Sales business from 2007. He now oversees Hanoi and Danang operations with over 500 team members across all consultancy, agency, property management and investment business lines.

Matt specializes in significant development projects providing consultancy, agency and strategic advice across both the residential, hospitality and commercial sectors; and working with investors for commercial and residential investment transactions. With over 15 years’ experience in the Vietnam real estate market, Matt’s clients include some of the largest domestic and international real estate players.



Alexander is Managing Director of ECCO Vietnam Ltd and is responsible for the wholly-owned production operations of the Danish brand in Vietnam.

Alexander joined ECCO in early 2016 following 8 years as founder of sustainable fashion garment manufacturer Vert Company in Northern Vietnam.

Alexander has a broad range of experience at Managing Director level in the fashion and footwear sector along with turn-key project completion, supply chain management and stakeholder communication. 

Alexander has a pan-European background and is multi-lingual. He is of dual British/German nationality though born and raised in Switzerland. He has lived in the UK, Spain, and for the past 12 years, in Vietnam. Alexander is married to Thuy and has one daughter. 

2. TOM VAIZEY – Vice-Chair

Tom is senior legal counsel with Dragon Capital Group, a Vietnam-focused asset manager. He is an English-qualified solicitor. Tom has spent most of his career in Asia, having worked in Hong Kong, India and Thailand as well as Vietnam. In addition to assisting BBGV with legal and corporate secretarial matters, Tom sits on the business and social events committee, and is occasional quiz master at BBGV quiz nights. Tom is married with two children.



Entrepreneur, Techie, Brit, bean counter, coach, baby boomer, BBGV Board Member last century and again since 6/2014 and Treasurer since 12/2014 with a focus on Finance and the Business Centre.

Posted to BP China as Finance Manager then relocated to BP Vietnam in 1990 makes Rick likely the longest Brit in Vietnam.

One of the ‘group of 4’ responsible for the “BP Compound” and co-founder of the Saigon Hash House Harriers.

Ken Atkinson started his career in international banking and after 14 years, including assignments in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, he set up his own consultancy business, which became Grant Thornton Vietnam.

With over 40 years emerging market experience and 38 years Asian experience, Ken has undertaken corporate finance transactions in many emerging markets worldwide (Eastern Europe, the People’s Republic of China and several other countries in South East Asia).

Ken has been working almost exclusively in Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR during the last 27 years. His work has included financial advisory, transaction support, appraisal of large projects, and capacity building projects funded by multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors.

He has broad experience in advising Clients including commercial banks on project appraisal, debt finance, loan restructuring and equity funding.

 5. BILL WATSON – Board Member

Bill is the Managing Director of Coats Phong Phu, a 30 year old joint venture between Coats Group plc and Phong Phu Corporation.  Coats has a rich heritage dating back to the 1750s, and

is the world’s leading industrial thread manufacturer and a major player in the Americas textiles crafts market.  Headquartered in the UK, Coats employs 18,000 employees in over 60 countries across 6 continents around the world.  With a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, Bill first came to Asia with Milliken Chemical, div of Milliken & Co in 1994 to set up their speciality chemical business throughout Asia.  With experience in both manufacturing, commercial and general management, Bill has led multicultural, diverse teams for over 24 years, and has specific expertise in change management, culture building and leadership, teamwork, risk management and compliance.  In his current role at Coats he leads 3000 people and is responsible for the business which includes 5 manufacturing operations across South East Asia.

 6. COLIN TERRY – Board Member

Colin Terry has been living and working in Asia for almost 30 years and joined the Jardine Matheson Group in 1992. He has held a number of different financial and executive board level leadership roles within Jardines across a range of industries, including insurance, technology and manufacturing, and he is currently the Finance Director of Siam City Cement (Vietnam) Ltd. He has also previously served for several years as an advisor to a charitable organization.
Colin is originally from England, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He is based in Ho Chi Minh city.


 7. NITIN KAPOOR – Board Member

Nitin has over 20 years of extensive experience combined with strong commercial awareness and business leadership skills across Finance, HealthCare and Pharmaceutical industries. Nitin joined AstraZeneca UK in 2011 and led several strategic Global and Regional roles to drive commercial model change and enhanced healthcare solutions with multiple markets across Asia-Pac, EMEA and the Americas.

Before moving to Vietnam in 2018, Nitin was based in Shanghai- China (2014- 2018) where he focused on expanding patient access, developing and deploying innovative healthcare solutions, led Strategy and Planning, Marketing and Sales Excellence, and Project Management Office. In his current role, Nitin is Company President for Vietnam & Frontier Markets (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka) and responsible for business, innovation, expansion and partnerships.

He is based with his family in Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam. Nitin holds a degree in commerce, MBA-International Trade and professional qualifications in Six Sigma, Oncology Master Class-Gustave Roussy France, Avaya-CRM, COPC, Script Writing, eRelationship Marketing, Project Management and Digital Marketing by Square-Google.

 8. RICHARD LEECH – Board Member

Richard hails from Warwickshire in the UK and is currently Senior General Manager of Alpha King Real Estate in HCMC. Richard has lived with his wife and two children in Vietnam since 2003. Richard has been an active BBGV Board Member for the last 5 years and has focused his attention on fundraising via successful events such as the BBGV Fun Run and dispersing funds to worthy charities such as Blue Dragon, with the building of a new Kindergarden in a remote area 3 hours outside of Dien Bien Phu as well as two upgrades to the Huong La Disabled Centre in Bach Ninh.

Richard is also the Co-founder of Advantage Property Services, which is the owning entity of the CBRE Cambodia office.

Over the last 30 years, Richard has been responsible for the development, leasing and management of many significant retail/commercial real estate projects in Southern Africa and more recently in South East Asia. He became a member of the Royal Institute for Chartered surveyors eight years ago and has serviced as Vietnam’s representative for the International Council of Shopping Centre’s. A seasoned speaker at numerous retail conferences and property market updates, Richard also trains brokerage and management teams on behalf of Clients in the Shopping Centre Industry.      

 9. LUCY GLYNN – Board Member

As Marketing Manager at British International School, HCMC, I have worked closely with the BBGV for two years. During that period I have developed positive relationships with a number of business leaders and board members. I am a regular attendee at BBGV events and thoroughly look forward to key gatherings throughout the year, especially the Family Fun Run – an event that our school community has enjoyed together for many years.

Living in Vietnam for nearly six years, Ho Chi Minh is a city that I love to call home. Before that, I lived and worked in the United Kingdom, graduating from Newcastle University Law School in 2005. Since moving to Vietnam, I have worked mostly in business development and digital marketing, accumulating experience in a number of areas such as; website build, optimisation and management, social media, and data analytics.

In my spare time I enjoy playing team sports, particularly basketball (despite my height), reading a good crime thriller and scuba diving.

 10. MATTHEW MARTIN – Board Member

Experienced Managing Director and C-level executive in banking technology and operations. Strategic thinker and visionary with track record of delivering organizational change and business development. Inspirational leader who has directed and developed senior leaders as well as operational teams to business excellence in emerging and developing markets. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Experienced and persuasive presenter and communicator with a calm but reassuring demeanor. An effective manager with the skills necessary to direct, train, and motivate staff to their fullest individual and team potential. Seasoned traveler, culturally fluent across South East Asia and the Middle East regions.
