Our fellow BBGV member and friend Michael J. Farrelly (Mike) passed away peacefully at 22:10 on 25th September in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.  Mike’s family, colleagues and friends had supported him through his final, difficult months in hospital in Singapore and back in Ho Chi Minh City.

A life-long Liverpool FC supporter, Mike was educated at St Mary’s College, Crosby, Liverpool and graduated from Bristol University in electrical/electronic engineering in the 1970’s. He worked for British Aerospace before being commissioned into the Royal Navy.

Mike moved to the oil industry in 1981, joining Fairfield Industries of Houston, Texas, a geophysical company engaged in exploration.  Mike visited Vietnam first in 1994, negotiating a processing joint venture with Petrovietnam. The JV commenced operations in 1996 and Mike took over as CEO in 2005.

In addition to a very active corporate life, Mike contributed his creativity, knowledge and energy to the BBGV.  Mike was a familiar face at many BBGV events and served on the Board in 2013-2014.  He initiated an annual BBGV football tournament in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mike lived the slogan of his beloved Liverpool FC “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and all that got to know him found in him a very good and sincere friend.  We all miss you, Mike.

Mike’s family wish to extend an invitation to the funeral services held at Phanxico Dakao Church; 50 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street District 1, in Ho Chi Minh City at 10 AM on Thursday, 1 October.

There will be a celebration of his life at the offices of Fairfield Vietnam, located on the 2nd Floor, Broadway E Building, No.2 Bertrand Russell Street, Phu My Hung Area, Tan Phu Ward, District 7, in Ho Chi Minh City from 17:00, on Thursday, 1 October, until there are no more stories.
