Message from our Chairman

Dear Member,

Welcome to the British Business Group Vietnam (“BBGV”).

The BBGV has been around for a relatively long time in Vietnam. We started as a small luncheon group and were one of the first business groups to be licensed here back in 1998. Recently and respectful of this heritage the BBGV Board felt it was a good time to revisit and re-state its objectives and role.

A first change coming out of this review has been a redrawing of our Mission Statement. I hope many of you will take the time to reflect on what it says and if you have comments I look forward to receiving them.

The new Statement is shorter than the version it replaces. It is intended to make the BBGV’s unique contribution and purpose as a business group clearer.

In line with the new Mission Statement, the BBGV works closely with the British Embassy in Hanoi and the British Consulate General in HCMC. This relationship allows a more effective representation of the views of British business both in Vietnam and in the UK. As an example, it allowed me to present the feedback from a survey of our members directly to Vince Cable, the UK Business Secretary, during his visit to HCMC last November. Please continue to share your business concerns with us so that we can represent these issues effectively on your behalf.

During the past year BBGV also joined the Vietnam Business Forum (VBF) as an Associate Member in order to give members a greater voice with another of our key stakeholders, the Vietnamese government.

I hope you were able to make time to take advantage of our business, networking and social events during the year. A highlight was the BBGV Christmas Party, ‘London Calling’ which celebrated Vietnam Airlines’ inaugural flight to London Gatwick. We celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June 2012 at the British International School in HCMC and at the Ambassador’s Residence in Hanoi with many members and friends helping us commemorate this special occasion.

Although we were unable to hold our regular Fun Run in 2011 I am pleased to confirm that this Saigon institution will be taking place again this year. The Run will be held on 30 September in District 7. This event raises the bulk of the funds for the BBGV charitable programme so your participation will make a real difference to the charities that we support.

BBGV is, of course, a members’ organisation. Without your active engagement there would be no point to its existence. Together, with the other members of the BBGV Board, I appreciate and value your continued membership and support.
