About us:
The UK has had a diplomatic presence in Hanoi, capital of the Socialist Republic of
Vietnam, for over 60 years. The UK and Vietnam have been Strategic Partners since
2010, reflecting the breadth and depth of the bilateral relationship and our shared level
of ambition for the future.

The British Embassy in Hanoi, the British Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City and
British Council work together to develop and sustain the important and long-standing
relationship between the UK and Vietnam. This involves dealing with a wide range of
political, commercial, security and economic interests.

What the sections of the British Embassy do:
The Prosperity Section works in partnership with Vietnam to promote the right political
and economic environment for mutual UK-Vietnamese prosperity. The Section’s work
includes: addressing structural challenges in the Vietnamese business environment;
working on the climate change agenda; promoting science and innovation; encouraging
good governance, human rights and the rule of law. It works closely with colleagues in the
Department for International Trade (DIT).

DIT helps UK-based companies succeed in international markets through tailored services
and support and ongoing advice. DIT fosters positive bilateral trade and investment
conditions through its contacts with the Vietnamese Government and the Vietnam
business community. DIT also assists foreign companies to bring high quality investment
to the UK’s vibrant economy and UK investment into Vietnam.

The British Government is also engaged in international issues in Vietnam. The External
Political team covers external political and security issues such as the South China Sea,
and global security issues like Syria and Iran. The team also follows closely Vietnam’s
relationship with international organisations such as the EU, ASEAN, IAEA, and the UN, in
particular on UN peacekeeping. The MOD Defence Section is responsible for the strategic
management and delivery of all Defence engagement. The Defence Attaché operates
across the full diplomatic spectrum, leading on Defence and Security capacity building in
both the classic military roles and in softer non-traditional roles. Defence Section staffs
are closely integrated into advancing hydrographic, geospatial, and Defence industry
opportunities. The National Crime Agency Attaché is responsible for law enforcement
engagement, works with Vietnamese authorities on shared criminal priorities and reducing
the harm caused to both countries by serious crime. The Home Office’s Migration and
Immigration team works with Vietnamese partners to tackle irregular migration before it
impacts the UK, including returning, and sustainably reintegrating, Vietnamese nationals
with no legal right to remain in the UK.

Consular Section assists British nationals by offering a wide variety of services. We
register same sex marriages and civil partnerships, provide legalisation and notarial
services – for example certifying copies of British documents – and provide assistance
for emergencies and in case of death, arrest, hospitalisation, etc. Passport applications
are handled by the HM Passport Office (applicants should visit the website https://www.
gov.uk/overseas-passports for information on how to apply from Vietnam).
UK Visas and Immigration oversee our commercial partners VFS who operate the visa
application centres in Vietnam. Further information about how to apply for a visa can
be found online at http://www.gov.uk/visas-immigration . If you need to ask a question
about the visa application process, you can contact our international visa enquiry service.
